4 DAYS DESERT PRIVATE TOUR FROM MARRAKECH TO MERZOUGA

This 4 Days Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga is the ideal option for those who want to spend a complete day discovering the Merzouga desert — not just passing through. While most short desert tours only allow for a camel ride and an overnight stay, this itinerary sets aside an entire day for Sahara exploration, giving you the space to truly connect with one of the world’s great natural landscapes.

You will cross the High Atlas Mountains, visit the iconic Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, traverse the Dades Gorges and Todra Canyon, and arrive at Erg Chebbi in time for your first desert sunset. The following day belongs completely to the Merzouga desert — with a nomadic family visit, a 4×4 desert tour, sandboarding, camel trekking, and a night under the stars. On the final day, you return to Marrakech through the ancient routes of the south.

– Enjoying sweeping views of the High Atlas Mountains
– Visiting the historic Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site
– Spending a night in a charming valley hotel in the Dades Gorges
– Walking through the breathtaking Todra Gorge near Tinghir
– Staying overnight at a riad beside the Merzouga dunes with panoramic dune views
– Spending a full day exploring every corner of the Merzouga desert
– Meeting and visiting a local nomadic family in their desert home
– Riding camels across the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes
– Watching both sunrise and sunset over the rolling sands
– Spending a starlit night in a luxury desert camp

DAY 1: MARRAKECH → HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS → AIT BEN HADDOU KASBAH → OUARZAZATE → DADES GORGES

An early morning departure from Marrakech sets you on the road south. The first hours are spent climbing through the curves of the High Atlas Mountains, with the Tizi n’Tichka Pass offering one of Morocco’s most cinematic driving experiences — ancient Berber villages, sheer rocky slopes, and valleys falling away far below.

At Ait Ben Haddou, you will stop to take in the majesty of this UNESCO-listed kasbah — an extraordinary complex of earthen towers that has appeared in countless films and series. Continuing through Ouarzazate, you follow the road east along the base of the mountains to the Dades Gorges, where you settle in for the night at a hotel perched above the canyon.

DAY 2: DADES GORGES → TODRA CANYON → MERZOUGA DESERT

After breakfast, the drive continues east toward Tinghir and the legendary Todra Gorge — a narrow canyon cut deep into the rock where sheer walls rise over 300 metres on either side of a rocky stream bed. The scale and silence of the gorge make it one of Morocco’s most awe-inspiring natural environments.

From Tinghir, the desert takes hold — the landscape opens into vast, stony plains that eventually yield to the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. Your arrival in Merzouga is timed for the late afternoon, when the light turns warm and golden. You check in to a beautiful riad directly at the foot of the dunes — the perfect first glimpse of the desert world you will spend tomorrow fully exploring.

DAY 3: EXPLORE THE MERZOUGA DESERT

An entire day to discover the Merzouga desert — one of the most extraordinary natural environments on earth. Your morning begins early, rising to watch the sunrise paint the dunes in shades of amber and pink.

The day’s programme includes an off-road 4×4 excursion through the desert, a visit to the encampment of a nomadic Berber family — where you will be welcomed with tea and conversation, learning about a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries — and time for sandboarding, photography, and quiet exploration of the dunes.

As the afternoon cools, mount your camel and ride into the heart of the Erg Chebbi for the sunset — one of the most memorable experiences Morocco has to offer. Dinner and an evening of live Berber music around the campfire follow at your luxury desert camp.

DAY 4: MERZOUGA DESERT → AGDEZ → MARRAKECH

After a final sunrise and breakfast at the camp, you begin the return journey to Marrakech. The route carries you westward through the ancient town of Agdez in the Draa Valley — a route lined with palmeries, historic ksour, and the quiet beauty of Morocco’s southern landscape — before climbing back over the Atlas Mountains to arrive in Marrakech in the early evening.

How do I pay for my tour?

Paying for your tour is straightforward. A small upfront deposit is required at the time of booking to secure your spot — this can be sent via PayPal, bank transfer, or Wise. The outstanding balance is then settled directly with your driver or guide on the first day of your trip, accepted in euros, US dollars, or Moroccan dirhams.

Morocco’s official currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). While major hotels and larger establishments tend to accept credit cards, smaller markets and towns generally operate on a cash-only basis, so it’s advisable to carry local currency.
