Eight days from Tangier to Marrakech — the grandest and most complete version of Morocco’s great north-to-south private journey. This 8 Days Tour from Tangier to Marrakech adds a full day of Sahara exploration to the itinerary, transforming the desert experience from an overnight stop into a genuine immersion: a 4×4 excursion into the remote dunes, a visit to a nomadic Berber family in their desert encampment, sandboarding, and a second sunset from the top of the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Beginning in Tangier, you travel through Chefchaouen’s blue medina, the Roman ruins of Volubilis, the imperial grandeur of Meknes, and a dedicated guided day in the ancient city of Fes. DAY 1: TANGIER → CHEFCHAOUEN

Your 8-day adventure begins with a pick-up from Tangier airport, port, or hotel. The road climbs south into the forested Rif Mountains, arriving in the extraordinary blue city of Chefchaouen by afternoon. The medina’s winding blue-painted lanes, artisan souks, and rooftop cafés are yours to explore from the moment you arrive. Overnight in Chefchaouen.

DAY 2: CHEFCHAOUEN → VOLUBILIS → MEKNES → FES

After breakfast and a final morning walk through Chefchaouen, the drive heads south to the ancient Roman site of Volubilis — a UNESCO World Heritage treasure set on a hilltop above the plain, its mosaics, arch, and columns remarkably intact after two millennia. From Volubilis, you continue to Meknes — imperial capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail, with its magnificent Bab Mansour gate and sweeping royal granaries — before arriving in Fes for the night.

DAY 3: GUIDED EXPLORATION OF FES

A full day in Fes el-Bali with a specialist local guide. Founded in the 9th century, Fes is Morocco’s oldest imperial city and home to one of the world’s most complex and beautiful urban landscapes. The Chouara Tanneries, the Bou Inania Madrasa, the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University, the Jewish Mellah, and the artisan souks fill a rich and unforgettable day. Every alleyway in Fes is a discovery.

DAY 4: FES → IFRANE → MIDDLE ATLAS MOUNTAINS → ZIZ VALLEY → MERZOUGA DESERT

Early departure from Fes. The road climbs through cedar forests — with possible Barbary macaque sightings near Azrou — through the alpine Ifrane, and down into the Ziz Valley. By late afternoon, the dunes of Erg Chebbi glow on the horizon. A sunset camel ride into the Sahara brings you to your luxury desert camp, where dinner, Berber music, and a private tent beneath the stars await.

DAY 5: DESERT DISCOVERY

The entire fifth day belongs to the Merzouga desert. After watching the sunrise from the dunes, a 4×4 excursion ventures deep into the Erg Chebbi, including a visit to a nomadic Berber family in their remote encampment. Welcomed with mint tea, you spend time discovering their traditions, their knowledge of the desert, and their way of life — one of the most genuine cultural encounters the trip offers.

The afternoon is open for sandboarding, photography, solitary dune walks, or guided exploration of the desert’s more remote landscapes. At sunset, another camel ride from the camp out to the highest dune. A second evening of Berber music and stargazing completes the day.

DAY 6: MERZOUGA DESERT → RISSANI → TODRA GORGE → DADES VALLEY

Sunrise over the dunes, then breakfast and departure west. Rissani — the ancient Saharan market town and ancestral home of Morocco’s ruling Alaouite dynasty — is worth a brief stop before continuing to the Todra Gorge near Tinghir. The gorge’s towering walls press close above a cool mountain stream, creating a narrow corridor of extraordinary natural drama. A walk through the canyon is one of the tour’s most vivid sensory experiences.

The afternoon drive through palmeries and pre-Saharan oases ends at the Dades Valley, where the hotel sits among spectacular layered canyon walls.

DAY 7: DADES VALLEY → OUARZAZATE → AIT BEN HADDOU → HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS → MARRAKECH

The penultimate day. The morning drive west passes through the Valley of Roses and into Ouarzazate — Africa’s Hollywood — before arriving at the magnificent Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. This UNESCO World Heritage Site of extraordinary earthen towers and fortified lanes is one of Morocco’s most iconic and photographed monuments, its ancient alleyways unchanged in their essential character for centuries.

After exploring the kasbah, the road climbs back through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, with sweeping views across peaks and valleys, before descending into Marrakech in the evening.

DAY 8: GUIDED EXPLORATION OF MARRAKECH

The final day in Marrakech — one of the world’s most extraordinary cities — with a specialist local guide. The Bahia Palace, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the ancient leather tanneries, the Saadian Tombs, the vast souks of the medina, and the legendary Jemaa el-Fnaa Square — which transforms at dusk into a great outdoor theatre of Moroccan life — fill the day with wonder. The afternoon is yours to explore independently, browse the souks, or visit the tranquil Majorelle Garden before your onward journey.

The outstanding balance is then settled directly with your driver or guide on the first day of your trip, accepted in euros, US dollars, or Moroccan dirhams.

Morocco’s official currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). While major hotels and larger establishments tend to accept credit cards, smaller markets and towns generally operate on a cash-only basis, so it’s advisable to carry local currency.
