4 DAYS OUARZAZATE TO MERZOUGA PRIVATE DESERT TOUR

This 4 Days Ouarzazate to Merzouga Desert Tour gives you the time and space to truly experience the Sahara — not just as an overnight stop, but as a full day of discovery. Over four days, you travel from the cinematic city of Ouarzazate through the finest canyon landscapes of Morocco’s south to the golden dunes of Merzouga, where an entire day is set aside for deep desert exploration: a 4×4 excursion, a visit to a nomadic Berber family, Gnawa music, and camel trekking across the magnificent Erg Chebbi.

The tour ends with a return to Marrakech via the dramatic High Atlas Mountains — a fitting finale to an extraordinary Saharan adventure. Every element of the tour is private and customisable to your preferences.

– Visiting the ancient Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site
– Driving along the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs
– Walking through the spectacular 300-metre cliffs of the Todra Gorge
– Riding camels across the Erg Chebbi dunes at golden-hour sunset
– Spending the night in a desert camp under the stars with Berber hosts
– Dedicating an entire day to exploring the Merzouga desert
– Visiting a nomadic Berber family at the edge of the Algerian border
– Listening to Gnawa music in a traditional desert village
– Returning to Marrakech through the majestic High Atlas Mountains

DAY 1: OUARZAZATE → AIT BEN HADDOU → DADES GORGES

Your private driver picks you up from Ouarzazate airport or anywhere in the city. The first destination is the legendary Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site of earthen towers and ancient fortified lanes, overlooking a dry riverbed. This extraordinary monument has served as a backdrop for some of cinema’s greatest productions, and its timeless atmosphere makes it one of Morocco’s most compelling stops.

After lunch in the Ait Ben Haddou village, the road continues east through Ouarzazate and along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. By evening, you arrive in the Dades Gorges — a landscape of soaring canyon walls in shades of ochre and red. Dinner and overnight at your hotel or riad nestled among the gorge scenery.

DAY 2: DADES GORGES → TODRA GORGE → MERZOUGA DESERT

The morning drive east brings you first to the Todra Gorge — where sheer limestone walls rise vertically for over 300 metres on either side of a cool mountain stream. Walking the gorge floor is an experience of dramatic scale and extraordinary beauty, and among the most visually powerful moments of the entire tour.

Continuing east, the pre-Saharan landscape opens up as you approach Merzouga. An experienced camel guide meets you at the edge of the dunes and leads the caravan into the heart of Erg Chebbi as the sun descends in a blaze of colour. Arriving at your desert camp, you are welcomed with tea before dinner under the open sky, an evening of live Berber drumming around the fire, and a night in a private tent beneath the stars.

DAY 3: FULL DAY TO EXPLORE MERZOUGA DESERT

After breakfast at the camp and a camel trek back to Merzouga town, the day belongs entirely to the desert. A 4×4 vehicle takes you deep into the Erg Chebbi, venturing off-road through the most remote and dramatic parts of the landscape.

The centrepiece of the day is a visit to a nomadic Berber family living near the Moroccan-Algerian border — welcomed with genuine warmth, you spend time learning about their traditions, their relationship with the desert, and their extraordinary daily life. From here, the excursion continues to a traditional village of Gnawa musicians — descendants of sub-Saharan Africans — where you experience their distinctive percussion music and ceremonial culture firsthand. Overnight in your hotel in Merzouga.

DAY 4: MERZOUGA → OUARZAZATE → MARRAKECH

After breakfast, the journey back to Marrakech begins. The route heads westward through the southern landscapes, passing through the gateway city of Ouarzazate before climbing back over the High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Several stops along the way allow you to enjoy the sweeping mountain views before the descent into Marrakech, where you are dropped off at your hotel or riad in the evening.

How do I pay for my tour?

Paying for your tour is straightforward. A small upfront deposit is required at the time of booking to secure your spot — this can be sent via PayPal, bank transfer, or Wise. The outstanding balance is then settled directly with your driver or guide on the first day of your trip, accepted in euros, US dollars, or Moroccan dirhams.

Morocco’s official currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). While major hotels and larger establishments tend to accept credit cards, smaller markets and towns generally operate on a cash-only basis, so it’s advisable to carry local currency.
