DAY 1: FES → IFRANE → MIDDLE ATLAS MOUNTAINS → ZIZ VALLEY → MERZOUGA

Your private driver collects you from your accommodation in Fes early in the morning. The road heads south through the cedar forests and mountain passes of the Middle Atlas. Ifrane — often called “Little Switzerland” for its alpine architecture and cool climate — is a pleasant first stop. The cedar forest near Azrou offers a chance to spot Barbary macaques, one of the world’s rarest wild monkey species, often seen in the trees by the roadside.

As the mountains give way to the pre-Saharan plains, the Ziz Valley cuts a lush green corridor through the increasingly arid landscape, its banks lined with date palms and ancient mud-brick villages. The first glimpse of the Erg Chebbi dunes appears in the late afternoon — a wall of golden sand rising dramatically from the flat desert floor.

You arrive at the foot of the dunes in time for the evening’s most magical experience: a sunset camel ride into the heart of the Sahara. At the luxury desert camp, dinner is served under the open sky, followed by an evening of live Berber drumming and singing around the campfire. Your private tent, with its own en-suite bathroom, awaits beneath a sky thick with stars.

DAY 2: FULL DAY TO EXPLORE THE MERZOUGA DESERT

A full day in the Sahara — and what a day. The morning begins with the desert sunrise, as the dunes transition from shadow to gold in the slowly brightening light. After breakfast at the camp, your private guide leads you on a 4×4 excursion deep into the desert, venturing off-road into the more remote and rarely visited corners of the Erg Chebbi.

The highlight of the day is a visit to a nomadic Berber family in their desert encampment — welcomed with the customary glass of mint tea, you spend time learning about their traditions, their relationship with the land, and the rhythms of daily life in one of the world’s most extreme environments. It is a genuine and moving cultural encounter that no museum or guided tour can replicate.

The afternoon is open for sandboarding down the dunes, photography, or simply sitting in the vast, extraordinary silence of the Sahara. At sunset, another camel ride out to the highest dune — the colours here are even more intense the second time around. The evening returns to the camp for dinner and a final night of desert music and stargazing.

DAY 3: MERZOUGA → TODRA GORGE → DADES GORGE

After breakfast, the journey heads west. The road passes through the ancient market town of Rissani before continuing to Tinghir, where the entrance to the Todra Gorge awaits. The gorge is extraordinary: sheer limestone walls rising over 300 metres, pressing close together above a cool mountain stream — one of Morocco’s most dramatic and photogenic natural environments.

From Tinghir, the afternoon drive continues westward through a series of oasis villages and pre-Saharan valleys, winding up in the Dades Gorge — another landscape of towering canyon walls and dramatic rock formations. Your hotel here, set among the gorge scenery, offers a spectacular setting for the night.

DAY 4: DADES GORGE → OUARZAZATE → AIT BEN HADDOU → HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS → MARRAKECH

The final day of the tour draws together the last great highlights of Morocco’s south. The morning drive west passes through Ouarzazate — Morocco’s Hollywood and the gateway to the Sahara — before arriving at the legendary Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site of earthen towers and ancient alleyways is one of the finest examples of pre-Saharan Moroccan architecture. Once a vital stop on the trans-Saharan caravan route, it has in more recent times served as a backdrop for some of the world’s most iconic films. After exploring its lanes and taking in the views, the road follows the famous Road of a Thousand Kasbahs before climbing back through the High Atlas Mountains via the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka Pass. The descent into Marrakech brings your four-day journey to a close, with drop-off at your accommodation in the evening.
