Ouarzazate — nicknamed “The Hollywood of Africa” — is one of Morocco’s most fascinating cities and the essential gateway to the Sahara Desert. Located at 1,160 meters altitude on the northern edge of the pre-Saharan steppe, this sun-baked city of 70,000 inhabitants has a dual identity: a genuine southern Moroccan city with a remarkable film production heritage. Almost every Morocco desert tour from Marrakech passes through Ouarzazate, and it deserves far more than a quick photo stop.
Atlas Film Studios: The World’s Largest Film Studio Complex
The Atlas Film Studios — actually a complex of several studios spread across the desert — is where some of cinema’s most iconic scenes were filmed. Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Babel, Kingdom of Heaven, The Jewel of the Nile, The Living Daylights, Prince of Persia, Game of Thrones, American Sniper, and dozens of other productions have used these facilities. Visitors can tour the sets, see reproduction Egyptian temples, Roman coliseums, and ancient city gates, and browse an extraordinary collection of props and costumes. It’s genuinely one of the most unusual and fascinating tourist experiences in Morocco.
Taourirt Kasbah: Ouarzazate’s Hidden Gem
The Taourirt Kasbah in the city center is a beautifully preserved 19th-century earthen fortress that was once the main residence of the Glaoui family — Morocco’s most powerful pre-independence dynasty. UNESCO has funded significant restoration work, and the interior reveals elaborately decorated reception halls, intimate family quarters, and rooftop terraces with extraordinary desert views.
