Morocco , Merzouga dunes

The Rose Valley and Dades Gorge form one of Morocco’s most extraordinary travel combinations — a route that moves from fields of Damask roses (spectacular in the May harvest season) to one of Morocco’s most dramatic canyon landscapes, all as part of the return journey from Merzouga to Marrakech or Fes. These two destinations deserve far more attention than they typically receive on rushed desert tours, and we’ve built them prominently into our extended itineraries.

The Rose Valley (Vallée des Roses): When and Why to Visit

The area around Kelaa M’Gouna in the Dades Valley produces over 4,000 tons of Damask roses annually — the majority of Morocco’s rose water and rose oil production. The harvest runs from late April to early June, peaking in mid-May, when the entire valley is carpeted in pink roses and the air is saturated with their extraordinary fragrance. The annual Rose Festival in M’Gouna (May) celebrates the harvest with music, dancing, and the selection of the “Rose Queen.” Even outside the harvest season, the terraced rose gardens, traditional rose water distilleries, and local argan-rose cooperative products make this a rewarding stop.

Dades Gorge: The Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs

The Dades Valley is dotted with ancient earthen kasbahs at a density found nowhere else in Morocco — earning its nickname “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs.” The Dades Gorge itself narrows into spectacular rock formations nicknamed “monkey’s fingers” — twisted volcanic rock columns rising from the canyon floor. The upper Dades (beyond the tourist zone) feels genuinely remote and untouched.
