Morocco , Merzouga dunes

The 2-day desert tour from Marrakech is proof that extraordinary Morocco desert experiences don’t require a week. In just 48 hours, you can cross the High Atlas Mountains, visit the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou kasbah, camel trek into the Erg Chebbi sand dunes at sunset, sleep under a billion Saharan stars in a luxury Berber camp, watch the sunrise turn the desert from purple to gold, and return to Marrakech — transformed. This is the most efficient desert experience on earth.

2-Day Marrakech Desert Tour: Complete Itinerary

Day 1: Early Departure → Atlas → Ait Benhaddou → Merzouga

Depart Marrakech at 7:00am to make the most of Day 1. The drive over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m) takes approximately 2 hours with a scenic stop at the summit. Visit Ait Benhaddou — 45 minutes to explore the outer ramparts and climb to the granary for panoramic views. Continue through Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley, arriving in Merzouga by 4:30pm — perfect timing for the sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes. The camel trek takes approximately 45 minutes into the dunes to reach your Berber desert camp, arriving just as the sun begins its spectacular descent.

Night: Desert Camp Experience

The Berber camp is more beautiful than any photograph can convey. Traditional tents decorated with hand-woven fabrics, lanterns creating warm pools of light in the darkness, a communal fire area where Gnawa musicians play traditional rhythms. Dinner is a feast — harira soup, fresh bread, chicken or lamb tagine, fresh Moroccan salads, pastries, and mint tea. Then the fire dies down and the stars emerge — the Sahara is one of earth’s last great dark sky preserves, and the Milky Way blazes overhead in a way that most travelers have never witnessed before.

Day 2: Sunrise → Breakfast → Return to Marrakech

Rise at 5:30am for the camel ride to the dune tops — the sunrise experience is not optional and not overrated. It is one of the most beautiful things you will ever see. Traditional Berber breakfast in the camp, then depart for the 9-hour return drive to Marrakech (via a different scenic route if time allows).
