Morocco , Merzouga dunes

Knowing the best time to visit Merzouga and Morocco’s Sahara Desert can transform your experience. The desert is open year-round, but conditions vary dramatically between seasons — from perfect spring temperatures to extreme summer heat, from crystal-clear winter skies to spring sandstorms. This complete month-by-month guide gives you everything you need to choose the perfect timing for your Morocco desert tour.

Spring (March–May): The Best Season for Desert Tours

Spring is widely considered the optimal time for Morocco desert tours. Temperatures in Merzouga range from 20–32°C during the day — warm and comfortable — with cool nights (8–15°C) perfect for sleeping in desert camps. The Atlas Mountain passes are snowmelt-fresh and extraordinarily beautiful. Wildflowers carpet the valleys, and the Rose Valley near Kelaa M’Gouna bursts into bloom in May — one of Morocco’s most spectacular seasonal events. Summer (June–August): Hot but Possible

Summer at Merzouga is intense — daytime temperatures regularly reach 42–48°C. This is genuinely extreme heat that requires careful planning. Camel treks are moved to the very early morning (6:00–8:00am) before temperatures spike, and all outdoor activities happen at the day’s extremes. Desert nights remain comfortable (22–28°C). Summer is the quietest and cheapest season, with significant accommodation and tour discounts.

Autumn (September–November): A Close Second Best

Autumn rivals spring as the best desert travel season. Temperatures moderate rapidly after the summer peak — October averages a perfect 28°C daytime in Merzouga. Desert nights become comfortably cool again. The date harvest (October–November) is a particularly beautiful time in the Draa Valley and Tafilalet oasis. Our 3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Tour in autumn is spectacular.

Winter (December–February): Cold but Magical

Winter desert tours are criminally underrated. Daytime temperatures are ideal for walking (18–24°C), but nights drop to 2–8°C (occasionally below freezing in January). Bring warm layers and a good sleeping bag. The compensation: the most spectacular stargazing conditions of the year, snow on the High Atlas creating extraordinary scenery, and dramatically fewer tourists. Our 3-Day Luxury Fes to Marrakech Tour in winter is particularly beautiful. Browse all seasonal options at our desert tours page.
